Stand-Alone Landscapes

Leah has created a variety of stand- alone landscapes that are not part of a larger collection. There are many times where a location is beautiful enough for a large individual study, but the plant life is not selected for detail paintings like in the Botany Collections. Many of Leahs’ favorite painting are these individual studies! Please take your time reading through the details to learn more about each location.

Golden Hour at Montaña De Oro

“I used to live in San Luis Obispo county while I was in college, and this location was my favorite place to spend my free time. I have spent many hours walking along the rocky beaches and a along the scenic hiking paths. Golden hour at this pictured spot is truly magical. “

Angels Landing

“I had the opportunity to visit the Utah parks, and see Angels Landing in person! Its in Zion National Park and the whole area is stunning. The parks are some of my favorite because of the unusual rock formations and unbelievable rock colors- which I tried to highlight in this painting. If you have not had a chance to visit, I highly recommend it. If you can go when there is still some snow on the ground, but with the red rocks peaking through- thats the most beautiful time of year in my opinion. “

The Manzanita Tree

“The Manzanita tree is a personal favorite. The striking color of the bark, coupled with the amazing shapes that the branches make is what I wanted to highlight in this painting. I have had the opportunity to study these trees at a family home in Coarsegold California. The mountain and valley views in that area are a treat also- especially at sunset. The combination of the rocky view and the barren manzanita tree made for a very impactful image.”

Buffalo Fields

“Of all the places I have lived, I have not had the opportunity to live somewhere that has snow. During one Christmas season, my husband asked for a snowy winter painting to help add some wintery feel to the season. I wanted something with snow, but hat could still fit the ascetic of our California home. The first thing that came to mind was a trip I had taken to Montana. The dry grasses and light winter snow cover is what inspired this painting. If you look closely you can see a light dusting of show on the buffalo’s backs.”

Summer Vacation

“This painting is not a an actual place that you can visit (unfortunately), but was created by referencing photos from several different locations. I wanted to create a painting that captured the feelings and memories of summer vacation. While I was growing up, my family would take camping vacations to Huntington Lake. My husband also grew up taking camping vacations to Yosemite. These days we still take summer camping trips when ever we have the opportunity! That feeling of warm sun-shine, cold lake water, clean air with dirt under your nails; thats what summer vacation feels like to me.”

The Androscoggin River

“The Androscoggin River is one of my largest paintings- too big to photograph on our usual green wall. This painting was a commission for a family member that asked for a 3ft by 6ft painting. I had just returned from New England trip and was itching to paint some of the scenery I saw while I was there. I had taken a panorama of this particular spot, and the fall colors of the trees and beautiful gray-blue of the sky created the exact kind of mood we were looking for. “

Cotton Skies

“Cotton is one of the many crops that my home town of Bakersfield California grows in abundance, and our county has historically been the states largest cotton producer. I was inspired to create this painting while driving past a cotton field in early fall. The cotton in California is typically harvested October and Halloween decorations were on my mind at the time. I wanted the look of an abandoned and overgrown cotton field to fit the spooky season. But after this painting was completed, my husband and I liked it enough that we ended up keeping it displayed through winter and into early spring time. “

April Showers

“I am often inspired by the changing of the seasons. In our home, we swap out the decor to match the changing months, and I am often in the position where I want a painting to capture the particular mood of the season. This one was made for April showers. The time of year in early spring where the grasses are green and you can often find large puddles on the ground after a warm evening rainstorm. “

Northern Lights

“Northern Lights was originally made for a close friend who asked for an oil painting. Her only request was that it included a lot of teal in the colors. After doing some brainstorming I realized that this particular color teal is not something that I frequently see in nature! However, I did eventually realize that this color has been captured in photos of the northern lights. Through a lot of research and reference images, this painting was born. Did you know that the northern lights can’t be easily seen with the naked eye? You need to take a photo to see all the colors. I wanted the painting to feel like the mist had cleared and the viewer was seeing those colors, unobstructed by a camera, for the first time. “

Yosemite

“Yosemite is one of my earlier paintings. I was inspired by the colors and style of oil painter Erin Hansen, and wanted to lean in to the impressionistic style in my own paintings. This view in Yosemite is one I have seen many times, and one of my favorites. It was the perfect setting for the bold colors and heavy brushstrokes that make up this painting.”
